Updated at 6:09 p.m. ET: Facebook has set a price range for its initial public offering of $28 to $35 per share, according to a regulatory filing, valuing the company at up to $96 billion and setting the stage for the biggest Internet IPO yet.

The IPO, expected this month, would raise up to $13.6 billion, of which nearly half would go to existing shareholders including company founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The company will raise about $5.8 billion, assuming a midrange price of $31.50 a share, according to the company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The preliminary price range would value the company at $77 billion to $96 billion, according to Reuters. That would be far higher than the previous record Internet IPO, which was Google, valued at $23 billion when it went public in 2004.

An IPO at the high end of the range would value Facebook at virtually the same level as Amazon.com, which has a market capitalization of about $103 billion. Facebook had net income of $1 billion on revenues of $3.7 billion last year, compared with Amazon's earnings of $631 million on total sales of $48 billion.

"People are going to be very comfortable with this valuation," Sam Schwerin of Millennium Technology Value Partners told Reuters. He said the price was conservative and predicted underwriters "will walk the range up."

The firm, which owns Facebook shares worth roughly $200 million, is not selling any in the IPO.

Facebook had revenue of just over $1 billion in the latest quarter, up 30 percent from year-ago levels, although profits were down because costs were sharply higher.

A total of 337.4 million shares will be sold in the offering, about 12 percent of the total outstanding.

Zuckerberg, 27, who will continue to dominate the company with 57.3 percent of the voting power under the company's two-class stock system. He could enjoy a $1 billion payday if the company goes public at the $35 level, because he is selling 30 million shares. His remaining stake of 503 million shares would be worth about $17.6 billion at that level.

Many analysts had expected Facebook to price its IPO even higher, at around $40 a share. Max Wolff, an analyst at Greencrest Capital Management, said Facebook had likely toned down the price range for the closely watched public offering because of the current subdued market mood.
“It feels to me that as market sentiment gets less bright, people are getting more nervous,” he told CNBC.

However, the Facebook IPO is still “a very big deal in every sense of the term,” he added, so it’s important for the 33 underwriting banks involved in the deal to see it go well.
The social media juggernaut, which plans to list its stock on Nasdaq under the ticker "FB," is wrapping up its prospectus with regulators and may begin its "roadshow" as soon as Monday, according to reports. During the roadshow, management will give potential investors a presentation touting its business.

Facebook’s roadshow will reportedly span New York, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Baltimore and possibly Los Angeles over eight or nine days. Based on that time frame, Facebook, the world’s largest social network, would be ready to go public in mid-May.

If all goes well, Facebook's stock would price May 17 and make its public debut May 18, The Associated Press reported.

And you thought Octomom had her hands full—a Tennessee man who has fathered 30 children is asking the courts for a break on child support.
Desmond Hatchett, 33, of Knoxville has children with 11 different women, reports WREG-TV.
The state already takes half his paycheck and divides it up, which doesn't amount to much when Hatchett is making only minimum wage. Some of the moms receive as little as $1.49 a month. The oldest child is 14 years old.
Hatchett explains how he reached such a critical mass: He had four kids in the same year. Twice.
Back in 2009 when Hatchett was in court to answer charges that many of the mothers were not receiving child support, he had 21 children. At the time, he said he was not going to father any more kids, but he ended up having nine more in the past three years.
The state cannot order Hatchett to stop making babies. He hasn't broken any laws, according to the report.

A man with a camera phone has been arrested after allegedly following children around department stores while touching himself and whispering for their attention.
Less than two months after Jonathan Davis was arrested for allegedly performing a sex act on himself in front of a young girl in a K-Mart in Hialeah, Florida, he has been arrested again for aggravated stalking of a minor.
Davis, 40, who is currently free on bail, was arrested on Friday after a security guard at a Burlington Coat Factory noticed him following three girls through the store.

Holding his cell phone against his ear, with the bright camera light exposed - a sign that he was filming, according to police - Davis allegedly wandered the store for young children before hiding behind aisles and making sounds to capture their attention.
In some cases Davis would allegedly call the children by making a 'psssst' or 'ouch' sound.
Other times he asked them where the toy department was and for help finding a toy for his niece.
Police do not believe any children left with Davis, but say that the investigation is ongoing.
'This is a guy who is brazen,' detective Felix Mendigutia toldCBS Miami. 'He's fearless. He's not afraid to get caught.'
Detective Mendigutia said he saw in some surveillance video Davis just inches from children who were standing with their parents.
'In some cases I could actually see that a parent was holding a child by the hand,' Detective Mendigutia said. 'In some cases the parent was five feet from their child.'
Audio obtained from Davis' cell phone describes his attempts for their distraction which in some cases, escalated.
'You can't see what I'm hiding,' Davis whispers in one recording to a child in a playful voice.

Over 80 videos were found on Davis' phone approaching young children, police said.
'You can see in the children's eyes when they would first look up at him and then they would look down in the area in the lower part of his body,' Detective Mendigutia said.
For the detective, what makes it all more worrisome is Davis' release on $50,000 bail shortly after his arrest on Friday evening.

'I don't feel comfortable with the fact that he's out on bond and I'm very concerned for the children in our society,' he said.

Adding to his recent charges of stalking and lewd and lascivious behaviour, in 2007 Davis faced three counts of indecent exposure in North Carolina he pleaded no contest to.
In those charges he allegedly exposed himself to several people in a park, including a 15-year-old.
He was sentenced to two years of supervised probation, according to Iredell county documents, as well as ordered to stay out of parks and playgrounds.
Following his cell phone's confiscation by a police officer, police say Davis wrote the responding officer an email apologising for his behaviour.
'He acknowledges that he has an issue and that he's gonna do something about it,' said Detective Mendigutia. 'He's gonna get help for it.'
Days later, however, police obtained a search warrant for his phone discovering his building video history.

-The game is targeting a rating of Teen/PEGI 16, but Bungie is not contractually held to hit this mark.
-The contract implies the game has in-game game masters, like those people who work for Blizzard and handle user requests in World of Warcraft while playing some kind of digital representation in the MMO world (or at least being accessible through in game chat).
-Bungie will receive a $2.5 million bonus if Destiny achieves a GameRankings.com rating of 90 or higher on Xbox 360 as measured 30 days after release.
-Bungie will also get a 20% royalty of the first $100 million in cumulative operating income, 24% on the income between $101-$400 million, and 35% on the income $401 million or above. These royalties are subject to a penalty of 2%, 2.4%, and 3.5% respectively if the games are delayed for reasons caused by Bungie within reason (i.e. if an earthquake destroys their studio they're not at fault, but if they just don't get the game done on time they are). These last two bullet points I'm leaving in the contract itself to cut down on OP length.

Motion control startup Leap Motion has demoed its Leap 3D motion control system, which can track motion to around 0.01mm accuracy — 100 times more accurate than the Kinect. Rather than taking Microsoft's approach, Leap Motion creates a personal 3D workspace of about four cubic feet. The Leap consists of a small USB device with industry-standard sensors and cameras that, in tandem with the company's software, can track multiple objects and recognize gestures.

In a demo given to CNET, Leap's designers showed off OS navigation and web browsing using a single finger, writing, pinch-to-zoom, precision drawing, 3D modeling, and gaming. From what we can see, it looks to be a very precise system, capable of recognizing objects in your hands and tracking them instead of your digits. Leap Motion is releasing an SDK and also handing out free sensors to "qualified developers" that want to develop for the system.


Although Leap Motion is a startup, it has significant funding behind it, and the system is scheduled to launch early next year at $69.99. Leap will be compatible with either Windows or Mac OS X, and is available for (US-only) pre-order from the company's website. Rutgers Trial: Dharun Ravi Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., May 21, 2012
Former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi was sentenced to 30 days in jail by a New Jersey judge today for spying on his roommate's gay tryst. Ravi's freshman roommate Tyler Clementi committed suicide days later.

"I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi," Judge Glenn Berman told the court. "He had no reason to, but I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity."

Ravi must report to Middlesex Adult Correctional Center on May 31 at 9 a.m. for his probationary sentence.

Prosecutors played a tape recording Saturday of the horrific 911 call that ended with the screams of Patricia Aldridge being shot 13 times by an AK-47, while multiple jurors burst into tears and the defendant, Derrick Gordy, leaned back in his chair and stared straight ahead.
The five-minute tape, recorded on Sept. 30, 2009, started with Aldridge calmly telling the dispatcher that four black male assailants had threatened her son’s life outside their South Sunderland Avenue home. A few minutes later, Aldridge could be heard goading the subjects.
“C’mon, try to hit me … uh huh … c’mon … here they come, here they come,” Aldridge said just before the call suddenly erupted into chilling screams and a barrage of gunfire that lasted between 10 and 30 seconds.
“Ma’am? Ma’am?” the dispatcher asked.
“I’m dead,” Aldridge said, before the sounds of gunfire took over the recording.
The Sheriff’s Office dispatcher who took the call, Roger Zecchel, testified in 19th Judicial District Court he would always remember that moment.
“I guess on a call that ends that tragically you don’t forget that type of thing,” Zecchel said.
The defendant’s attorney, Bruce Craft, acknowledged that the tape was “very disturbing,” but said that nothing it contains identified his client as the shooter.
Derrick George Gordy, 19, is on trial for allegedly killing Aldridge, 40, and her son, Ronald “Ronnie” Thacker Jr., 21, outside their South Sunderland Avenue homes near King Bradford Drive.
Gordy, of Baton Rouge, was 16 at the time.
If convicted on both counts of second-degree murder as charged, he would be sentenced to life in prison.
An eyewitness, Joshua Williams, 19, testified that he had seen Gordy shoot Aldridge five times in the legs, before standing over her and firing three more bullets into her body. When Thacker ran toward his mother, Gordy cut him down with more gunfire, Williams said.
“He starts shooting, she falls on the ground,” Williams told jurors. “He stands over her, keeps shooting. Ronnie runs up, he shoots him, and he shoots him again.”
Craft, the defense attorney, told the jury Williams was an unreliable witness because he lied in court about the fact that he had bought and smoked marijuana earlier in the day at Jay Winters’ house.
Winters, 31, who had driven Gordy and his accomplice, Demario Alexander, away from the crime scene, pleaded guilty in January to obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Williams acknowledged he had lied about the marijuana at Winters’ house, as well as details about his criminal history.
“You expect this jury to believe what you told them with your history of being a deceiver?” Craft asked Williams, a material witness arrested out of state and brought to Louisiana to testify in Gordy’s trial.
“Yes, sir,” Williams replied.
Williams told the jury he was certain it was Gordy who had done the shooting.
“I’ll never forget that face,” he said.
Another witness, Kenji Gray, who lived with Williams in the other half of the duplex that Thacker occupied at the time of the shooting, said that he had seen Gordy’s face as the defendant was firing the AK-47, even though it was very dark outside.
“Every time the gun went off, the brightness, the face, you could see everything,” Gray said. “Like when lightning strikes, it lights up.”
Corroborating the testimony of Thacker’s two best friends who were at the scene, Gray and Williams both said that Gordy got into an altercation with Thacker, left the area, then returned after 10 minutes armed with an AK-47.
Another prosecution witness, Dominique Franklin, testified that Gordy had been eating pizza about 5:30 p.m. in her single-story apartment, located near the crime scene on King Bradford.
When the shooting broke out, one of her friends banged on her door to seek cover, she said. About 20 minutes after the shooting, Franklin said, she heard footsteps overhead, as if someone was walking on her roof.
Sheriff’s Capt. Todd Morris, who was the lead investigator on the case, told the jury he retrieved the AK-47 assault rifle used in the attack from Franklin’s rooftop a few days later, on Oct. 3, following a Crime Stoppers tip.
The trial is scheduled to resume in state District Judge Trudy White’s courtroom at 9 a.m. Monday.

While we wait to hear Kaz Hirai's new plan for Sony, the news is getting worse before it gets better. The company just announced new projections that are more than double the net loss it predicted in February for the fiscal year 2011, to the tune of $6.4 billion. The reason? According to Reuters, it's additional tax expenses that are causing the pain, as Sony says it's "due to the establishment of valuation allowances against certain deferred tax assets, predominantly in the U.S." There is a silver lining to this cloud however, as the company is projecting an operational profit of 180 billion yen ($2.2 billion US) in 2012, compared to a loss of 95 billion yen ($1.16 billion US) last year. There are already predictions that Kaz will announce significant cuts in jobs and bonuses on the 12th, and from the numbers in the PDF linked below you can see why.
