Natal automatically recognised that I was a woman by using its sensors to look at my hair and body shape, and loaded a female avatar without any prompting.

will you be upset when it gives you a female avatar when you walk infront of it oli? i mean those bitchtits :drool

This one came from a female Press player.

Quote

Both Nintendo and Sony, who today announced their own innovations in motion-sensitive control, suddenly looked very old-fashioned when compared to the step-change in game control Natal represents.

yep. nailed it.

and she ends the article platy too. this is minority report stuff and it's so close to fruition. closer than we thought and even better. the tech will be copied by nintendo and sony without doubt. it'll be refined and software will be made just for it.

to read things like "it recognised me", "detects you even through furniture", "detects multiple players", "recognises different voice, objects...".

I'd like to see 1:1 accuracy with it though. the hardcore won't jump on otherwise. I also think it should start off as a toold for UI manipulation and slowly work it's way towards gaming.

I really really really want a lightgun game like that.

i tried it too, and i wasn't impressed at all. maybe i did it all wrong but besides those targets moving around on my plasma tv nothing happened. didn't get the 3d feel... :(

:lol @ n-off. did you even read the telegraph article? the IQ of this place is embarrassing at times.

yes, you can play multiple players at once. it recognises your voice and logs you in. it EVEN DETECTS THE GENDER OF COMPLETE STRANGERS and assigns the appropriate avatar.

yes, it detects objects, so you don't need to buy sony's dildo, you can use your own.

yes it detects fingers and body movement. again read the article. it detected the reporter twisting limbs and shaking ankles.

yes, the final version will eliminate lag. this is clearly not finalised tech.

yes, you can use this with a controller or without or a bit of both (which most shooters will.

yes, milo has been demonstrated behind closed doors, so it's real and works.

and suddenly controlling with gestures is exhausting? i guess nintendo should throw in the towel then? :lol

this interface would be PERFECT with fight night.

Completely agree.

Also, Ubisoft at their shitty conference had a Wii fit type game where it would actually show you how far you should bend to get into the right position to be doing the exercise correctly.

I was thinking, they could do that with fight night. They could actually teach you to box with this. Probably won't but they could. The possibilities unlocked...

losing Thoughts
Matt: Project Natal is the vision of gaming that's danced through people's heads for decades—gaming without the abstraction of controllers, using your body and natural movements—which came more sharply into focus when Nintendo announced the Wii a few years ago. I haven't been quite this blown away by a tech demo in a long time. It looked neat onstage at Microsoft's keynote. Seeing it, feeling it in person, makes me want to believe that this what the future of gaming looks like—no buttons, no joysticks, no wands. The only thing left to get rid of is the screen, and even that'll happen soon enough.
Mark: 2010...or maybe even 2011...is just too long to wait. I want Natal now.

"you mean you have to use you hands?" :lol

welcome to the future (HANDS ON MILO & NATAL):

Quote

E3 2009 may not have officially kicked off yet, but it's already been a show to remember. After all, it's not every day you get to see the likes of James Cameron, Paul McCartney and Pele chatting about videogames. Nor is it every day you get to have a conversation with a virtual 10 year-old or play Burnout with an imaginary steering wheel.

But today is one of those days, because today Microsoft is revealing Project Natal to the world. Fresh from the E3 conference, we dropped by their posh hotel to go hands-on - or rather, hands-off - with the new technology.

Milo & Kate

First up is Peter Molyneux's new baby. As you'll know if you followed our live text, Milo is the name of the new AI character in development at Lionhead Studios. And as you'll know if you read our interview with Peter Molyneux, or could have predicted if you know anything about Peter Molyneux, Kate is the name of a dog.

But the dog's not on show today - instead we're presented with Milo on his own, sitting on a swing by a river. Molyneux invites me to try interacting with him by standing in front of the screen and moving around the room.

As I move, the camera moves with me. Shift your body left and the camera pans left; tilt your body forwards and it zooms in, and so on. "Normally you'd be using the right thumbstick for this," observes Molyneux. It's a bit disconcerting, but in a good way; looking around to change your viewpoint feels a lot more natural than pushing a stick.

What about those who would rather stay sat on the sofa? The technology works just as well when sitting down, according to Molyneux: "You just move your torso and your head to move around. It can be a very relaxed experience."

Now, he says, we're going to train Milo to recognise me. I'm told to smile and frown to start the process off, and I try to make things easy for Milo by exaggerating my expressions like a gurning champion at a rave. "That's too much," says Molyneux. "You don't smile and frown like that in real life, do you?" He clearly hasn't seen my Facebook page.

I tone it down a bit and sure enough, Milo jumps off his swing and walks towards me. "You OK?" he says.

It's unnerving, there's no doubt about it. Instinctively I reply, "Yes, thank you. How are you?"

"Wearing black, I see. It suits you." He's not wrong.
About the first bit, anyway. But once the shock of Milo noticing this wears off, I realise he hasn't answered my question. Perhaps this is one of the tricks used to make you think he's real; and they are indeed tricks, as Molyneux is happy to admit.

I try another direct question. "Have you had a nice day, Milo?" He smiles and nods, so I go for something more complex. "Did you enjoy Microsoft's E3 conference?" He's non-committal. "Are you looking forward to the rumoured unveiling of the PSP tomorrow?" Milo nods. The truth is though, he doesn't really know what I just asked. He understood I was asking a question by listening to the tone of my voice, but he didn't understand the words. Knowing that doesn't make the whole thing much less unnerving, though.

Molyneux invites me to go and look at the fish in the river, as seen in the E3 press conference. The water effects are stunning anyway, but to see yourself reflected within them is astonishing. "Swish the water about a bit," says Molyneux, so I do. There are one or two odd moments where the water doesn't quite seem to flow naturally, but once again, the overall effect is highly impressive.

The demo's over, and all too soon. I didn't get to try out the work or play activities, or draw a picture for Milo, or meet his female counterpart, Milly. Not to mention the dog. There are still lots of questions about Milo & Kate, particularly with regard to how scripted the conversations are and just how clever your virtual friend really is. Here's hoping we'll get to find out more soon.

head tracking et al. this tech is sick. the more i'm reading up on it, the more impressed i am.

check out their Burnout and Ricochet impressions too.
http://www.eurogamer...hands-on?page=2

the response has been positive so far.

:btw where are all the people saying this was fake now? yep.

If MS was smart (and it seems they're going the dumb route with this), they'd make badass games for Natal that are similar to the cyberspace scenes in Johnny Mnemonic. With Natal they are already there with the hand movements and the voice recognition. I'd love a JM-like game that revolves around terrorizing a 3D internet fucking with people with the same look and feel of the movie.

Example for those who have not seen the movie:

someone had this idea on GAF mina:

Quote

Don't know if it's been said before but for the love of god....

STAR TREK GAME PLEASE!!!

You sit there in your chair and you are captain. You give commands, the characters follow your orders. If you want to do something yourself, like take the helm, it shows you the console and you manipulate it with your fingers.

If you need to use a phaser, can just point on the screen with your finger and yell "stun" or "kill". But it's not a FPS. Holy shit it would be the greatest game ever made. It could even have online multiplayer... ship to ship battles, or co-operative play, with friends on different stations and you ordering them, your avatar mimicing your gestures.

Every star trek fan on the planet would buy this, any and console and equipment needed to play it.

i bet your moist :lol

Natal Project Director Alex Kipman...

Quote

Eurogamer: So this technology isn't just for use with Arcade titles or specially designed games like Milo & Kate? It could be used to play regular games?

Alex Kipman: Absolutely. We see there being three types of game. We love the [existing] controller, it's not going anywhere and there will continue to be games that are specifically made to only work with a controller. We'll have games that are specifically designed to work only with Natal - not just arcadey games, but real, hardcore, triple-A titles.

Then you'll have some games that are essentially a hybrid - games that work both with the controller and with Natal. Why is that interesting? Think about a first-person shooter where I'm using the controller but I'm doing facial tracking by just moving around and looking round corners.

Or you could have a hardcore gamer like me playing a game with a controller, while a non-hardcore person sitting next to me enjoys the experience by playing with Natal. I could be having my Halo experience with the controller and the friend next to me, who's not a hardcore gamer, could be throwing grenades or driving the Warthog or doing any number of things with Natal.

We can track up to four players in the same way we track controllers. Each individual player will be able to choose - do I want to bind with a controller, or do I want to bind with my body, or do I want to bind with both?

Bububu Casual games only :bow :bow

Hell even if no games are built for it anytime soon I'd buy it day 1 just for the awesome UI experience.

I can see it now, I walk in and tell the 360 to turn itself on as it autologs me in since it recognised my voice, as I flip through the options in the menu with the wave of a hand in the air until I find geometry Wars 2, then launch it with the push of a finger in the air...

Pachter says Natal could cost less than $50, that camera technology doesn't cost that much, that MS won't put it out until Holiday '10 when it has 30 games ready to go, that all the big developers will be making 3-5 big games, Fight Night for Natal was mentioned, and more importantly that Natal is a trojan horse to get wives and non-gamers to use 360 features like instant 1080p movie downloads and internet functions like Facebook and videoconferencing:

So.... MSFT is going to release a browser for Twitter & Facebook ?
An onscreen virtual touch screen keyboard would be kinda kick ass to type with.
