PSP Go

We heard from Sony at its E3 press conference that it won't "replace" the PSP-3000 or UMD, it's 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the original PSP. All future retail titles will have retail and PlayStation store release. Japan can look for it Nov. 1 for ¥26,800. [North America/Europe pricing is $249 and hits October 1st. - Z]

Sony is planning to launch a replacement for the PSP Media Manager software -- used for accessing the PlayStation Store and transferring movies, music and games from PC to PSP -- called Media Go. Sony Computer Entertainment prez Kaz Hirai has stated that the software will "makes content transfer of pictures and movies [to PSP] that much easier." Media Go is expected to launch alongside PSP Go in early October.

Hot on the heels of the PSP Go announcement, Sony also tells us at E3 that Gran Turismo may finally see release on the system. They say that even though the game will be on the tiny system, it will be packed with content: 800 cars to race around on 35 tracks with multiple variations that actually allow for 60 different race route. In singleplayer, you'll be able to run singleplayer time trials, and there will also be a mode to help your driving improve. Multiplayer will bring ad hoc four player racing as well as the ability to trade cars back and forth with your friends.

Sony introduced the PSP Go at today's E3 media briefing, a smaller, pricier alternative to the already available PSP-3000. That new model was available on the E3 show floor, attached to new PSP games. We got to go hands on when the show opened.

The PSP Go is much more narrow than the original, a tiny little device that features the same visual quality, just with a half-inch smaller LCD screen. That smaller hardware footprint means a much tighter control layout, with the analog control nub moved to the right of the digital directional pad, making for a wider reach with the left thumb.

That move to the right will take some getting used to. It doesn't feel natural, but doesn't necessarily feel bad. It's just that my thumb reflexively went for the d-pad. That's no good for a game like SOCOM Navy SEALs Fire Team Bravo 3, which uses the analog for player control.

On the more positive side, the PSP Go's d-pad and face buttons—square, circle, triangle, X—feel more precise, more "digital" than the squishier controls on the original PSP. They feel really tight.

The new shoulder buttons, which now reside behind the slide up screen feel fine. Not particularly good, not particularly bad. Just something that's going to take a little time adjusting to, if you're used to the beefier L and R buttons on the current PSP.

Weight-wise, we really couldn't tell how much lighter the PSP Go was. It was locked down and attached to a bulkier weight, so no feel impressions there. Same for the slider. That was locked down too.

The relocation of the audio and display buttons from the face of the PSP to the top of the device on the PSP Go makes sense. I had expected those two buttons to be replaced with a software adjustment solution, but it appears the PSP OS is identical to what's already available. Tapping the PS (or Home) button launches you into a familiar interface.

The PSP Go feels solid. Tiny, but solid. Those hands are mine, and they're a bit on the wee side. Adjust the size of your hands accordingly.

$250 lol, I don't see how this is going to stop the ipod touch/iphone threat. If anything it just pushes people more towards it.

Sony wants this device to fail in competition with its older PSP.

So it seems that IGN and many other have asked SONY about a UMD transfer strategy.

All responses point to SONY having something planned to entice UMD owners to get the PSP GO.

I wonder how it will work.

$250 is a bit too pricey, methinks.

$200 would have been the sweet spot for an instant buy

I would have gotten it right away if it was 200 euro. In this aspect Sony has completly lost it.

DS costs less, even X360 you can get for 150.

I can't believe there was so much hype about this crap leading up to E3. This is like one of the least interesting things to be shown at E3.

Who the hell would pay $250 for a PSP in 2009? The PSP came out in 2004(JPN)/2005(US/EU) and was $250. Almost 5 years later for the exact same graphics hardware they want the original launch price? They did absolutely nothing to improve the problematic controls (analog nub looks like it's in a worse position), they made the screen smaller, took away the ability to use a backup battery, and removed the ability to play retail discs. Sub PS2 graphics on a handheld were impressive in 2005 so they could at least justify the $250 pricetag somewhat. Now it's like Sony has given up all hope of ever competing with Nintendo. They also seem to still be primarily making home console games for a portable, which is what basically nobody wants from portable gaming.

They can throw all the money in the world behind it, the PSP is a total disaster. On a portable I would rather play the types of games that are available on iPod Touch or DS. Sony isn't even second place anymore.

Coming from a non PSP owner, the $50 more or less doesn't really matter, what does matter is this is the first iteration that feels desirable to me. Most dramatically is the fact that is just looks aesthetically a whole lot better, call me shallow but for me its a large selling point in a mobile device, I will be out in the open with it after all. The old design was just too clunky looking but this looks much more sleek. Equally as important is the fact that a tonne of killer games were announced, GT PSP, MGS PSP (both looked great), RE PSP, combined with the existing catalogue, the ease of downloading them all, the video and music service... I think its finally reached a point where I want a PSP.

If the PSPGo had another feature other than the improved form factor and 16GB built in, it would have been insta-buy.

Maybe the final model will have a camera. Im sure Sony wont just let the camera accessory go to waste here because it wont fit on a PSPGo.
