great read. http://us.wii.com/iw.../vol1_page1.jsp

some excerpts.

Quote

Iwata - I suppose the obvious question is: if it offers such huge advantages, why didn't you use it in the Wii Remote from the very start?

Takamoto - We actually looked into the idea of including a gyro sensor at the very start of the Wii Remote's development. But the idea was rejected due to issues of space and cost which attaching a gyro sensor would entail.

surprise :chuckle

Wii Motion Plus will sell at least 10 million times. at $20 a piece, thats $200,000,000 extra revenue for making it an add-on.

Quote

Ito - That's right. Which is why we designed the sensor so it could detect 1600 degrees of movement per second.

Iwata - Which is about four and a half complete rotations. For a person to rotate their hand that much would demand quite an effort!

:bow Motion Plus > Dildo

Quote

Takamoto - Whatever we did, moisture would get in.

Iwata - How did you manage to solve this tricky issue?

Ito - So we boiled the entire circuit board.

Iwata - You boiled it? You're telling me you really tried that?

Everyone - (laughs)

Iwata - Circuit boards aren't normally something you boil, you know! (laughs)

Takamoto - There are ways to get plastic to absorb moisture so that it becomes stable. One of those ways is to boil it.

Iwata - Well I never…!

Ito - So we went and bought a pressure cooker…

Iwata - A pressure cooker?

Ito - Er… And we put it on expenses. Sorry about that!

awesome :lol

I bet when you saw the dildo the first time your sphincter wished nintendo had made the wiimote with fewer harsh edges, but you quickly silenced it, labeling it an "sfag".

wii motion + embarrasses sony's effort imo. it's out RIGHT NOW with real games. Sony are late to the party again.

and in 2 years Nintendo will have fullbody recognition along with MS and sony will come with their wand.

i have no idea what's going on at Sony. christ.

Remember when Miyamoto complained that the 512 mb flash was so expensive? :lol

Nintendo is the cheapest company in the industry. Those fuckers must be swimming in money right now, cause they sure as hell ain't spending it on hardware and software.

It is as 1:1 as Sony's solution... it just required recalibration more often

You know in the Wii Sports Frisbee mode... Grabbing the frisbee out of the dog's mouth recalibrates the Wii remote.

With motion tracking as time goes on any doubt about the Wiimotes position accumulates and eventually it loses track of where the Wiimote is in 3D space. Recalibration resets it so the game will work perfectly.

With Sony's solution the camera is constantly calibrating the wand's position.

PS3's 1:1 has less latency due to the methods involved, is more accurate and precise, and has real 3D tracking while the Motion plus only has relative tracking.

Nintendo won't have full body recognition because it is not something that will be adopted by the masses. Nintendo and Sony have looked into full body tracking without a controller, and both have come to the conclusion that a tangible device is required for gaming.

Sony's wand comes out in Spring 2010, while Natal will likely launch in the Fall of 2010 and will be less precise, feature no 1:1 tracking, and not be applicable for 90% of core games.

I have no idea what's going on at Microsoft, but when 2/3 of the industry disagrees with your approach you will see 3rd parties eschew Microsoft's tech in favor of Sony/Nintendo. After seeing 'In the movies' and Rare's efforts this gen, Natal is going to be a complete failure, especially since the device will cost an arm and a leg due to all of the processing required (it has its own chip).

The tech is the same in Sony's Wand and Nintendo's Wiimote. They're both just as precise as each other.
Sony's only advantage is the camera which is constantly tracking the wand in 3D space so no calibration is needed. It makes sure the wand never messes up.

That's not true; the IR sensor limits tracking. You have to have the Wii mote pointed at the IR sensor.

The Sony remote can be tracked in three dimensions and doesn't have to be pointed at a sensor.

Also, it is more precise and has less latency.

Hans why are you arguing about something clearly is essentially the same thing?

I agree that Natal is stupid though and the wands, while also terrible, are better.

There is however no reason at all MS couldn't add a controller of sorts in. To have VR, which is essentially the ultimate goal for video game technology, you need to have Natal, not some stupid wand.

Microsoft has stated that the controller is a barrier to the acceptance of a more universal form of control. So no, they aren't going to be using any controllers or wands in conjunction with their tech. And to have more motion precision, you need a wand, and you need 1:1 tracking, something Natal does not provide.

And, it's similar, but not the same. Sony's tech is clearly better. More accurate, more responsive, true 3D tracking, and no re-calibration.

The Wii remote does not need to be facing the IR sensor at all. Some games don't even use the sensor bar.
