Megaupload, one of the internet's largest file-sharing sites, has been shut down by officials in the US.

The site's founder and others have been charged with violating piracy laws.

Good thing I still have their URL/IP DNS info stored locally in my hosts file.

Me and Swizz Beats are good to go.

EDIT: Unless it's actually been taken offline, not just delisted.

This is what happens when you steal other people's work. Piracy is wrong.

Harder to do.. completely distributed and is up to ISPs where or not to provide access. 3rd party Usenet providers would also have to cease and desist..

But I agree- whereas usenet used to be more messageboards, now it is like 99% file sharing..

Still a whole lot less obvious to the outside world than sites like Megaupload tho

I like Swizz, too, but piracy is out of control. File sharing is great, and there is definitely a market for cheaper alternatives for new music to the rip-off of a $14.99 CD. But, simply pirating someone's hard work is wrong. There's no excuse for it.

Taking down usenet? Hard.
Taking down news servers? Easy.

Eh.. 3rd party Usenet providers all provide retention of files for their users.. that's what you're actually paying for.

Its not like there's a single server for each newsgroup :lol

In any event- not saying its impossible, just much more complex than taking down a site like mega

The problem is this dangerous precedent of shutting down a service because it inconveniences somebody else. It also showcases the mounting precedent of national laws with a global reach. Megaupload is hosting in Hong Kong and the operators were arrested in New Zealand.

To everyone thinking they're taking a moral highground by supporting this action " because piracy is bad", I'd just like to point out that there's a bigger picture outside of your selective little bubble of complacency.

Furthermore, the government might be coming for websites that are 90% pirated material, but what about the 80/20, 70/30, 50/50, 10/90 websites? When I get a speeding ticket, the cop doesn't give a shit about my deliberation or how often I speed.

The company was registered in Hong Kong, but it seems the servers were actually in Virginia.
