Batman

Quote
Before Christopher Nolan took over, director Darren Aronofsky was attached to make a Batman movie based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and have the author Frank Miller write the screenplay. By 2003 there was a first draft screenplay with story boards, which are properties of AOL Time Warner. Warner's decision for not producing the film is unknown, but based on the details that have since leaked out, it would probably have to do with the screenplay, which strayed a considerable amount from the source material, making Alfred an African-American mechanic named "Big Al," the Batmobile being a souped-up Lincoln Towncar, and Bruce Wayne being homeless, among other things. This is all detailed in David Hughes' book "Tales from Development Hell."

AICN article on the 1st Draft
The two articles kinda ignore each other on some aspects, but this is because Miller had his own screenplay and Aronofsky was the one who made this really grim dark. Miller even laughed how he happened to be the lighter one, but yeah Aronofsky was the one who thought of Big Al', Batman being a poor ghetto and being totally insane practically.
The wikipedia one is basically about Batman & Gordon fightning mobsters, with Catwoman being in it, wheres the AICN article talks about Penquin being the main mobster villain, and Red Hood appearing thru halfway the movie and his birth as the Joker.
I'd recommend reading both articles, while the thoughts may seem literally insane, it does have some good ideas. It literally was a straightforward take on Batman and his insanity, wheres other Batman movies really do portray Batman as a hero, even the movies that have Batman literally kill people, he's still a hero to Gotham! Some of these ideas made it into Miller's Dark Knight universe such as Batman's first cave being in the sewers, and him momentarily living as a homeless man eating rats to survive... Just to prove himself he didn't need the Wayne family funds.
